TMS for Depression

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Berlin

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive treatment for depression. Targeted magnetic pulses stimulate brain regions that are underactive in depressive disorders.

The treatment is approved, evidence-based, and recommended by international guidelines – particularly when medication is insufficient or poorly tolerated.

Who Is TMS For?

Depression that has not responded adequately to medication (treatment-resistant depression)
Side effects from antidepressants, or preference for a non-medication approach
Wish to augment your current treatment
Individual Suitability
We assess suitability during an initial consultation.

How It Works

1

Initial Consultation

Assessment, informed consent, discussion of treatment goals.

2

Treatment Course

20 sessions over 4 weeks (Mon–Thu). Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes; the stimulation itself takes about 3 minutes (iTBS protocol).

3

Progress Monitoring

Regular assessment using standardised questionnaires.

4

Completion

Evaluation and recommendations for next steps.

No Anaesthesia, No Hospital Stay
You remain awake throughout and can resume your day immediately.

Technology

We use the MagVenture MagPro R30 with Cool-B70 coil – a system established in clinical and research settings. The iTBS protocol (intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation) delivers effective treatment in significantly shorter session times compared to older protocols.

Side Effects

TMS is well tolerated. The most common side effect is mild headache after the first few sessions, which typically resolves on its own. Serious side effects are very rare.

Cost

Treatment is billed according to the German physicians' fee schedule (GOÄ). Private health insurance (PKV) frequently covers the cost – we recommend checking with your insurer before starting treatment. We are happy to provide a cost estimate.

Self-pay patients are welcome.

Important for Expats
If you have German private insurance (PKV), TMS is often covered. Statutory insurance (GKV) does not cover TMS.
