ADHD

Diagnosis and Treatment for Adults

ADHD is a neurobiological developmental condition. The brain networks that control attention, impulse regulation, and executive function work differently than in people without ADHD.

This has nothing to do with lack of discipline or willpower. It's a matter of brain physiology – and it can be treated.

ADHD – Hyperactivity Is Not Required
Many adults – especially women – do not show pronounced hyperactivity, but rather inner restlessness, daydreaming, and difficulties with organization. We therefore often refer to it as AD(H)D.

Common Symptoms

Difficulty staying focused on tasks
Procrastination
Inner restlessness, feeling driven
Impulsive actions or speech
Problems with time management and organization
Mood swings
Quick exhaustion with uninteresting tasks
Self-esteem issues from repeated experiences of failure
Why Getting Diagnosed Can Help
Many adults have compensated for years – until exhaustion, self-doubt, or professional difficulties increase. A structured diagnosis can provide relief and targeted support.

Diagnosis

1

Initial Consultation

Medical history, symptoms, background. Determines whether comprehensive testing is appropriate.

2

Testing

Structured questionnaires and interviews. Duration: 2–3 hours. Instruments include HASE and CAARS for English-speaking patients.

3

Results Discussion

Diagnosis and treatment recommendation.

When possible, we include collateral information (from parents, partners) and school records in the assessment.

Existing Diagnosis

If an ADHD diagnosis already exists, we check whether it was made according to guidelines and if current documentation is available.

Before Starting Medication
Laboratory tests and ECG.

Treatment

Medication

Stimulants or non-stimulants, gradually adjusted with regular monitoring.

Psychotherapy / Coaching

Behavioral approaches and strategies for daily life and work. Therapy capacities are limited.

Combined Treatment: Medication and psychotherapy often complement each other effectively.

Appointments

Appointments are usually available within a few days. Diagnosis and treatment are available in English.

Costs: Private insurance, civil service aid, or self-pay (GOÄ).

ADHD and Autism

ADHD and Autism
ADHD and autism spectrum conditions frequently co-occur. Where indicators for both are present, we can conduct a combined assessment. Learn more about autism assessment →
